Comparison of deficiency levels

Micronutrient deficiencies are common after bariatric surgery, irrespective of the kind of procedure. To assess the need for nutritional support for Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) patients, the prevalence of nutritional deficiencies after SG was compared with the prevalence after Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB).

Iodine absorption after bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery is often accompanied by malnutrition of several vitamins, minerals and trace elements. Iodine is a trace element, needed for synthesis of thyroid hormones. Since iodine is absorbed from the intestinal tract, patients after bariatric surgery are hypothetically at risk of malabsorption. This study aimed to estimate the daily absorption of iodine for patients after bariatric surgery in which several parts of intestine were bypassed.

For a long time, professionals have stated that a Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) procedure has minimal impact on the nutrient status. However, studies have found that deficiencies are as common in SG patients as in Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass patients. To prevent vitamin and mineral deficiencies after an SG, lifelong supplementation is recommended.
